Virgin Media O2 has successfully diverted nearly 45,000 business smartphones and tablets from landfill through its relaunched O2 Recycle for Business programme, which went live in October 2023.

This initiative is a key part of Virgin Media O2’s broader sustainability strategy, which aims to facilitate 10 million reuse and recycling actions by 2025.

The programme enables UK businesses to trade in old tech for financial rewards—including cash, credit towards new devices, or donations to the digital inclusion charity, the Good Things Foundation. So far, businesses have collectively earned around £330,000 through the scheme.

The service is designed for ease of use, offering free courier collection for bulk returns and prepaid postal options for remote employees. All devices received are securely data-wiped before being refurbished for resale or fully recycled. Virgin Media O2 guarantees that no device parts end up in landfill, supporting its mission to cut down on e-waste.

Dana Haidan, Chief Sustainability Officer at Virgin Media O2, commented:
“We know that businesses are looking for practical ways to be more sustainable. Our programme makes it easy for companies to reduce waste, recycle outdated tech, and give old devices a new life.”

She added that the scheme also supports digital inclusion, helping to provide repurposed devices to individuals who lack digital access—enabling them to connect, access services, and develop essential digital skills.

Tackling the E-Waste Crisis

E-waste is growing faster than any other domestic waste stream globally, according to the UN. Since 2010, global e-waste levels have increased by 82%, with projections showing a further 32% rise by 2030. The recycling infrastructure has not kept pace, leading to billions in wasted resources.

The UK ranks as one of the highest producers of e-waste per capita, second only to Norway. In response, MPs on the Environmental Audit Committee have called for stronger regulatory action.

While much attention focuses on consumer waste, the corporate sector is also a major contributor. Virgin Media O2’s research reveals that nearly 12 million business devices are currently sitting idle across UK workplaces. The company argues that a significant portion of these could be refurbished or recycled, representing a missed opportunity for businesses to recover value and reduce environmental impact.
